This was a large replacement house for an existing cottage and outbuildings on a spacious, sloping site overlooking Newtownards. The client requested a functional, more traditional house form with contemporary styling for open plan living. The house is orientated to capture the marvellous views and create private, sunny rear garden spaces where large automated sliding doors open to seamlessly link the garden to the interior. The main block of the house is designed on three levels with a central open core and feature stone chimney through the first two floors, and a chill-out zone on the third floor with a feature all glass viewing dormer. All four bedrooms have dressing areas and en-suites with a guest suite located on the ground floor. The spacious living, kitchen, dining area links through to a high technology cinema/music room, and a private internal courtyard gives access to the garages and rear hall, utility areas of the house. A separate drawing room and an open-plan garden room and a private study complete the generous internal accommodation.

All finishes were selected to minimise future maintenance issues. The exterior of the house is finished in Sto self- coloured, self-cleaning render with grey z-stone feature elements, grey granite and Rheinzinc detailing, Italian light oak timber windows externally finished in polyester coated aluminium, and a natural slated roof.

It was decided to demolish the original bungalow on this elevated but restrictive site in Portstewart to create a new detached private house which would capture the magnificent views of the golf course and over Portstewart strand towards Castlerock. In order to provide the required accommodation, the house needed to be on three floor levels whilst complying with planning height requirements. This was achieved by excavating into the site to create a large garage, utility space and bedroom study at a basement level, with the main living areas above roofed in a low pitched standing seam aluminium roof. An open plan living/dining area opens up onto a spacious balcony at first floor, and a snug room and master bedroom suite open up to a smaller under cover balcony at second floor level. This ensured great views and connection to external space from all the principle rooms. The kitchen and other bedrooms look out onto a spacious and secluded rear garden area.

Care was taken in detailing and construction to ensure low running costs by achieving high levels of insulation and good air-tightness, and low maintenance by the choice of external materials. The sharpness of the Sto self-coloured and self-cleaning render along with natural cut stone as the basement walling and the marine quality grey aluminium window frames help create a contemporary appearance to the building.

The client, who is a part-time farmer, sought a modern Farmhouse, to allow him and his family to continue the upkeep the family farm. McCarter Hamill Architects took inspiration from the existing farm buildings contained on the site. The main living section of the dwelling is contained within a Standing Seam Zinc Clad barrel roof which took its form from existing curved roofed hay shed with corrugated iron cladding. The bedroom section of the dwelling took its form from pitched roofed outbuildings, being connection to the living block with a flat roofed link.

We applied the existing form of the farm outbuildings in a contemporary manor with traditional materials of timber, stone and glass. The dwelling imitates the interplay of rectangular plan shapes which would be common to all rural farms creating a comfortable, modern family home, with an element of open plan living which integrates in the farm and the surrounding landscape. This dwelling allows future generation of their family to continue to tend to their land and their animals.

This project involved the make-over of a small 1960’s bungalow with lovely sea and mountain views at Ballyconnell, Falcarragh Co.Donegal. A small extension with a full-width window was built to the side of the house to accommodate the dining table and affords stunning views over Horn Head. The yard to the front of the house was lowered and a full length porch built wrapping around the side of the house, providing a sheltered outdoor space in which to sit and relax.

A new set of pillars with dry stone walls to the side were built to provide enclosure to the site. Muted colours were chosen for the timberwork and the house has a relaxed, handcrafted feel. Internal alterations were also made and the transformation took only 10 weeks to complete.
